 Want a few more mph!
« Thread Started on Jun 9, 2012, 10:55am »

I've got a stock 2008 Benzhou (Saga) 150cc GY6.

I commute along a community highway with traffic that averages 50 MPH. My scoot can just get to that speed but I'm hitting 8000 rpm.

Can the forum offer economical suggestions that could get me a few more mph on the top end?

Appreciate any help.

Mark.

Sounds more like you need either heavier rollers or a gear kit. You are turning too high an RPM for that speed.

Just my 2 cents

Jim

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the comment.

So the heavier rollers will bring my rpm down, will I sacrifice any top speed?

Cheers,
Mark.

No, Heaver rollers means more top speed. but you might sacrifice acceleration speed.

no problem. Rollers are one of the cheapest ways to get a little more speed and the easiest :)

Hi Mark, I am fairly new to a lot of the upgrde stuff, so I keep reading previous posts to learn more. I think you could benefit a lot from this one:

Under the 125cc category...second post from the top I think
Topic: roller/slider weights......post your results here

I haven't changed my variator rollers yet because of shoulder surgery, but when I do...I'm gonna try to split my rollers into two different weight categories, such as 3 - 11 gram and 3 - 14 gram, and stager them in the tray. In theory, it should allow for quick take-off speed because of the 11's and good top-end speed because of the 14's. That is what I'm starting with anyway. I may decide to use a different combination in the end.
Anyway, that thread talks a lot about it and has some good results. Hope you check it out.

Most people don't realize it, but they have a "Bitch Switch"...likely it is stuck in the "ON" position.

I was where you are now. I of course had to go the other way because my bike came with 17 gram rollers so I topped out at 52 mph at 5500 rpm. So I went down to 12 gram sliders brought my RPM's up to 6800 and squeezed out 55 mph. Then I dropped in a 15/38 rear gear set dropped my weights to 9 gram sliders and put in a 1500 yellow torque spring. I have decent acceleration and at WOT I can hit 62 mph at 7200 rpms. All speeds are gps confirmed.

Before doing all those mods. It probably will help better if you tune the carb right. That alone has solved many problems of poor running. These carbs are tuned almost dangerously lean from the factory.

Also you really can't trust either the Chinese speedometer or the Chinese Tachometer. It might be a good idea to confirm your speed and rpm's with a gps before tuning and experimenting with weights. I say this because 8000 rpms at 50 mph is really high for a stock scooter. And I've rarely seen stock scooters with light weights in the variator, they're almost guaranteed to be too heavy. And it's a common misconception that heavy weights=more top speed. You need to tune the CVT to stay in the maximum power band, then no matter what you'll achieve maximum top speed and not lose acceleration. And this usually means putting lighter weights in.

Basically I'd confirm the rpm's are what the tach says with a digital tach hour meter available from ebay for about $20. Then confirm the top speed with a gps. Then we can advise you better on what to do.

And like I said before a lot of times just rejetting the carb properly will get you more speed than experimenting with all sorts of weights and CVT stuff. You can have a $1000 in your transmission but if the engine is running like crap, you'll still have a crap running scooter.

First find out how your Variator is working and how high your belt is moving up, mark the variator and find out where you stand.

wow 50 at 8000 rpm , did you buy the scoot new? if you did something in the cvt is wrong or not working correctly, like the others said. i really don't see the tack or the speedo being off that bad. so its prob somthing in your clutch or variator , or both. if you got it used it could be that someone put to small of roller weights in the variator. and its keepi the belt from riding up higher on the vari
