 wheel size
« Thread Started on Aug 19, 2012, 9:42pm »

ok, we all know that there is long case and short case CVTs. we know that long case comes with 12-13 inch wheels and short case comes with 10's. is there any difference to the wheel mounting flanges or anything like that? or is the only hold-up on mounting 12's or 13's on a shortcase purely just tire width and diameter/radius? should the front bolt up fine assuming i have room under the fender? i'm asking because i have super ugly steel 10's on my scoot and the best styles of aftermarket rims generally come in 12-13.

I'm wondering too. I've been podering getting some bigger tires for my short case 50cc. What's the biggest I can go without running into any problems?

The axle size is larger on 12-13 inch rims..most likely will not work. Try higher profile tires on your 10 inch rims. They do offer some nice looking cast 10 inch rims. As for how high of a profile tire you can go...really can't be answered as each scoot has a different fender height. Example...my scoot has 130/70-12 tires(tall and fat like Crotch Rocket bike tires) with 2 inches fender clearance..my girlfriends scoot has 80/90-10 tires and she has right at 5 inches of clearance. So you will have to measure the clearance you have now..then when you look at tires online....read the specs....it will tell you the diameter... 8-)

Thanks for the replies. That's the info I needed. That counts me out for the wheel upgrade. But there might be hope for you, rbrooks. I saw in your thread that you are looking into a gear upgrade. While you have the gearbox open you might want to see about replacing your axle to the right size so you can fit larger wheels. I don't know if that is possible but I think it at least deserves a little research. If the axle does fit and no other issues come up, I could see you fitting 120/60/13 tires with minor relocation of the shock. Maybe someone else on here knows what other snags you might hit

ok....further research done......swapping longcase wheels to shortcase is totally possible. but a royal pain in the rear(kinda like my scooter seat). would require more money to accomplish than it would just to do an engine swap. axle may or may not be the same. some are 19 spline at 5/8 diameter on both short and longcase. some are 24 spline, not sure of diameter, i believe mainly on the longcase. shortcase has 4.5" ID drums longcase has 5". to the best of my knowledge this info is accurate. would take alot of swapping, not to mention possible machining to get it done. possible, but not worth it. thank you carasdad for the axle info. gave me one more search criteria to enter into google. wouldn't have found the info i got without the tip. maybe some of the guys on the forum here knew all this stuff to begin with, but i didn't...now i do ;D
